Ex- National Football League Player Mark Sanchez Faces Battery Charges Following Stabbing Incident

Ex-professional football player Mark Sanchez was accused of assault causing harm, being drunk in public, and unlawful entry of a vehicle after a Saturday altercation in the city that resulted in his hospitalization with stab wounds.

Details of the Altercation

According to an affidavit, Sanchez approached a 69-year-old truck driver at a hotel loading bay. The driver claimed he believed “this guy is trying to kill me” and deployed pepper spray to protect himself. After it failed to halt Sanchez from moving toward him, the driver said he stabbed Sanchez “multiple times”. Sanchez then allegedly threw the man against a dumpster before a look of shock appeared on his face and he “ran away”.

Investigators have examined recorded video of the event. Bystanders said that Sanchez and the driver recorded one another with their cellphones throughout the altercation.

Police wrote in the affidavit, “Mr Sanchez is seen chasing [the man] and the video shows Mr Sanchez seizing and hurling [the man] towards the wall of the Westin hotel.”

How It Started

The confrontation reportedly started after Sanchez and the trucker disagreed about a parking space.

Injuries and Aftermath

This altercation resulted in knife injuries to his upper body, while the driver suffered cuts to his facial area. The former player was hospitalized for his wounds, which were not life-threatening, before he was arrested on that day. He is scheduled to appear at a hearing on Tuesday morning.

Based on the affidavit, Sanchez informed officers “the only thing he recalled was grabbing for a window.” He could not recall who stabbed him or the location of the event.

Authorities’ Statement

“This incident should never have happened,” the county attorney said in a statement. “Starting as a dispute between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man ought not to have turned into a physical fight or caused severe harm to anyone. In line with standard procedure, we will adhere to evidence and regulations wherever they lead.”
