Jan Paul van Hecke Secures Point for Brighton After Bart Verbruggen's Costly Error Versus Wolverhampton Wanderers

Jørgen Strand Larsen, after being a major transfer collapse late in the window, appeared frustratedly confronting Wolves' coaching staff at full-time. It happened following his second-half substitution, just moments after he struck the post with Wolves leading thanks to the Brighton goalkeeper's own goal. Brighton pushed for a last-gasp leveler, that came through Jan Paul van Hecke.

Wolverhampton Frustrated Once More by Last-Minute Strike

This marks the second successive match, Wolves' attempt to kickstart their campaign underway was stymied by a late tying goal. Vítor Pereira had been dismissed just before the top flight's bottom side went ahead, when a Munetsi volley came back off the bar and in off the Brighton goalkeeper.

Brighton's side earned a point for their after-interval dominance, but Wolves, in their second game in a row following their draw at Tottenham, looked as if they would manage to hold out for a first league victory of the season before conceding a last-minute leveler.

Game Explodes with Drama

Strand Larsen looked Wolves' most likely source for a crucial second goal, and the home team looked struggling to break forward with Arias leading the line. The game burst into action in the middle of the opening period.

Pereira was furious at Jarred Gillett's decision not to give a free-kick when João Gomes was challenged by Baleba in the middle in the opposition half. Then, following the official cautioned Baleba for an altogether clearer foul on Bueno, the red card was issued to the coach for kicking a spare ball off a cone at the referee's dugout. Although he quickly apologised, it was clearly a reckless act. The fire had been lit.

When a long set-piece into the visitors' box was headed back into the danger area, Danny Welbeck only managed to clear the ball away as far as the midfielder, to the right of the penalty spot, who unleashed a veritable hammer of a shot toward goal. Although the keeper managed to deflect the ball onto the underside of the bar, it rebounded back and across the goal-line off the shot-stopper's glove.

One almost became two, only for Verbruggen to calmly push Krejci's headed effort, from another long angled set-piece, to safety. Brighton, with their deeply strong record at Molineux – they had won their previous four previous games – and a positive beginning to the campaign to boot, counterattacked with occasional threat.

After the Break Action

When Tchatatchoua underpowered a return pass, Brajan Gruda was entitled to challenge Johnstone for the ball, although he made contact with the home goalkeeper with his challenge. After a tetchy period, the significance of the next goal became increasingly apparent. It almost went Wolves' favor, soon in the second half, only for Arias to place high from six yards after a superb counterattack spearheaded by Larsen, after he enabled Hwang Hee-chan to invite the advancing Hugo Bueno to cross low.

The away side, somewhat slow in the first half, looked more potent for the introducing of Rutter and, from Yankuba Minteh's left-wing delivery, the replacement could barely have caught his half-volley any more sweetly.

Johnstone, though, vindicating his retention in goal ahead of Sá, leapt back to his right to save. The Brighton coach had previously asked Yasin Ayari to patrol the base of his engine room on his own, leading Brighton to greater possession dominance, when he introduced the forward Stefanos Tzimas to join Welbeck in the frontline, with Diego Gómez just behind them.

Late Drama as Defender Strikes

Brighton have scored more goals against Wolves than against any other team in the top division. But Wolves were determined to hold firm to what they held and so came close to sealing the game to bed when Larsen shot against the foot of the post. The Norwegian forward, yet to regain full fitness after an achilles injury, appeared far from impressed when he was withdrawn minutes later as Luis Miguel, the manager's assistant, looked to secure the victory. The decision failed however as Brighton drew level with four minutes left.

Wolves believed the ball had already gone behind for a goal-kick when the defender made sure by nudging it on. From Minteh's short corner, De Cuyper delivered and, after the substitute got a small flick-on, the defender thudded home only his second goal in seventy-seven league games for the team.
